Regions  |  Midland

The Midland region was founded in 1985 by a group of binders from Nottingham and Derby, led by David Ackrel. It now has around sixty members drawn from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire.

We are associated with two well established classes that meet weekly for 10-12 week terms:

The Midland region runs several workshops every year in addition to a varied programme of visiting speakers and demonstrators. The workshops are designed to address basic training needs and to introduce elements of design, finishing and decoration. We also have outings to specific venues (libraries, archives, etc.). Talks and demonstrations are free for members and £5 for non-members. Workshop costs are announced separately.

Meetings take place at Shepshed High School, Forest Street, Shepshed, Leicestershire, LE12 9DA (map) unless otherwise stated.

For additional information about the events, please contact the Events Coordinator.

It will cover the secretive history of marbling and show how, despite guarded practices, currently the process is very much influenced by the past in creating a whole new level of design. Along with this material Pamela will show and discuss various contemporary marbled papers and talk about the trajectory of her own work.

Arthur Green: Medieval Bookbinding Structures (talk/demonstration)

Independent book conservator Arthur Green will speak about medieval bookbinding structures; concentrating in particular on the development of sewing and board attachment. This informal talk will look at four key bindings: Ethiopian, Anglo-saxon, Romanesque and Gothic. With the aid of models Arthur will attempt to illustrate the way in which these medieval books were constructed and the mechanics of how they worked; as well as exploring what a modern bookbinder or conservator might learn from them. The evening will conclude with a short demonstration of the technique used to sew an Ethiopian binding.
